Color Me Cone 6
This workshop will be a structured exploration of color development in cone 6 oxidation glazes. Students will learn how to batch a glaze for testing and how to perform test sets for widely varied or more nuanced results. Once tests are fired, we will discuss the hows and whys of what we are seeing. Presentations and a comprehensive handout booklet will help students understand the information contained in our test tiles. This fun, informative workshop will benefit both novice and experienced testers: there’s always something to be discovered. We will use test tiles made from an iron-bearing clay with a white slip on one half, and we will fire as many times as we can. Whether you make pots or sculpture, you will have the information you need to gain control of your glazing practice. All levels.

COLOR ME CONE 6
A TWO-PART ONLINE WORKSHOP HOSTED BY POCOSIN ARTS
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22 FROM 5:30 to 8:30p, EST
SATURDAY, MARCH 8 FROM 5:30 to. 8:30pm EST
$210
This two-part workshop is a hands-on introduction to color development in glazes. Color is a complex subject with infinite possibilities. Copper, i.e., can manifest in glaze as a variant of green, blue, red, brown, or black, it can scatter light to create dichroic effects, and it can modify/be modified by other colorants to bring more nuance into the fold. The addition of one or more colorants to a ‘base’ glaze actually alters its chemistry to a greater or lesser extent; it becomes a new glaze with new chemical properties, likely to behave differently, so attention to application thickness and maturation temperature become important parts of the equation. Toward this end, participants will investigate color parameters using a standard color testing strategy (instructions for testing will be provided). Results will be discussed during the second section of the workshop. A lecture component will introduce the basic chemical components of a cone 6 glaze and the role each plays, with emphasis on those that affect color development; address colorants and their properties with regard to how they may change the appearance or behavior of a glaze; and provide context for how to apply this knowledge to your studio practice.

COLOR ME CONE 6
A TWO-PART WORKSHOP
PART ONE
This workshop is an introduction to color: color in glazes is a complex subject with infinite permutations. Colorants actually change a glaze’s chemistry to a greater or lesser extent; this can change the surface texture and viscosity of a glaze and we’ll look at why that happens. I’ll break down colorant behaviors and explain the anomalies we encounter. We’ll look at all common (and a few uncommon) colorants and discuss the importance of their properties as they affect a variety of base glazes. I’ll also do an abbreviated demonstration for a coaxial color run—a great testing strategy for beginners—that blends two colorants in equal parts. This knowledge will give you the agency to control your own glazes and ultimately create a custom palette. Participants will receive handouts for several glaze testing strategies and base glaze recipes for cone 6.
PART TWO
Return in 2 weeks’ time to review and discuss your own test results. During this session, I will dive a little deeper and talk about the importance of application thickness and firing temperature for consistent results.

HOLD FAST!
August 14 - 18, 2023 @
Touchstone Center for Crafts
Slab-built success comes from an understanding of how and when best to join pieces with one another. Hold Fast! will introduce slab-building techniques for pots, with special attention to seam strength and overall best slab construction practices. We’ll address soft slab connections, leather hard connections, and soft slab to leather hard connections (yes, it can be done!). The focus will be on investigations into construction of utilitarian forms, rather than finished products. Bisque only.
All levels welcome.
Touchstone Center for the Arts is located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of southern Pennsylvania, near Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, both homes designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and open for tours.

Birdie Love at Schaller Gallery
Solo exhibition with Anthony Schaller Gallery in Baroda, Michigan and online.
With love as the theme, you can expect sweet pink tones and juicy secondary oranges and purples to represent love/tenderness/emotive states, along with something to cut the sugar (not yet sure what). Forms will mostly be intimate in size or for the table.
virtual WORKSHOP w/Pocosin Arts
SUNDAY JULY 11. 2 TO 4 PM.
INTERFACE: harmonious form and surface
This workshop will focus on bringing form and surface into balance. We’ll look at and talk about pots with surface in mind and discuss different ways to imbue pots with a sense of atmosphere in the mid-range electric kiln process. I’ll cover the ins, outs, ups and downs of using bisque slip as an interface between clay and glaze--at cone six it’s a bit tricky. We’ll also take a close look at visual and tactile qualities of different types of glaze and how they can improve interfacing for the potential to elevate your pots through unified form and surface.
ALL (WELL, A LOT) ABOUT BISQUE SLIP
I’ll cover what I’ve learned about using bisque slip (also known as crackle slip or bisque crackle slip) over the last decade or so, specifically about its use at cone 6. In the early days, I ran into issues of application. In the years that followed, I learned to work around those issues and a lot more. Bisque slip holds a lot of potential, but it can be temperamental if you let it. I’ll share what I’ve learned so far in terms of the slip recipe, mixing a batch, application, and firing, and will show you various fired examples and discuss those results. I encourage you to come with questions and even samples of your own use of bisque slip at cone 6, successful or not.
THERE’S MORE
I’ll also introduce you to the way I think about the glazed surface through a brief discussion of the properties of light transmission, texture, and colorant receptivity, all of which variables control a surface’s atmospheric tendencies and add nuance to the work as a whole. Feel free to bring glaze questions or samples.

FOUND IN TRANSLATION: paradise
This workshop is designed to focus on finding inspiration—in an exciting and investigation-worthy environment—deconstructing it, and translating its elements into your ceramic work through materials, technique, form, and surface. Inspiration comes in many forms—it may be direct or indirect, known precisely or perhaps only felt.
We will explore paradise, gather inspiration and work toward making formal decisions (deciding which materials and ways of working best represent our ideas) and use elements of design to generate dynamic forms and surfaces.
Wherever (and however) you find it, this workshop will give you the creative tools to pursue your inspirations thoroughly and confidently, no matter where you find yourself next.

WHO’S Birdie Boone?
My ceramic practice finds me translating something like ‘elusive moments of remembered experiences’ through ceramic materials and processes. I love how materials inherently carry meaning, just waiting for the metaphor to arise. And if materials carry meaning, then why not the process by which we make things or the type of kiln we use to fire those things? Or the form (object) we choose to make? For me, it’s an instinctive way of working; I absorb my environment and experiences and what’s of concern about them is revealed, in terms of all these aspects, through my work. I don’t try to name it or tame it, and I am always excited to see how my work changes when my environment changes. That’s why I am so excited for this opportunity to teach in such a beautiful place. An abundance of inspiration!

SUMMER WORKSHOP at Idyllwild Arts
The Well-Rounded Pot: Handbuilt Forms and Color Investigations
Go beyond addressing utility, discover how to include subtle metaphoric or allegoric cues that are paramount to making ‘well-rounded’ pots that beg to be used. You will investigate the ways ceramic materials and processes can be used to initiate sensory experiences. Work with soft to leather-hard slab construction techniques and investigate surface possibilities via glaze color testing as a means to create minimal yet expressive forms using handbuilding processes. Concentrate on simplicity of form, the care of your touch, and formal (technical and aesthetic) decisions that serve your intentions. Demonstrations and discussions will include paper pattern development, making simple greenware and bisqueware drape and press molds with mica clay, glaze color development, and problem-solving toward creating and revealing meaning through ceramic materials and processes. You can expect to leave with new templates, clay drape and press molds, fired glaze tests, bisque-fired pots that inform your current work or lead to new directions, and a few glaze-fired pieces.

June 17, 18, 19 10 - 4pm
This class is geared toward someone with basic skills -- late beginner to advanced. Please email us any questions.
During this 3 day workshop, Birdie will demonstrate her hand building methods, share what motivates her own formal and technical decisions, and lead discussions on how ceramic materials and processes can 'follow' meaning/metaphor. Participants will learn to make hand building aids/tools including bisqueware/greenware bullet molds, hump molds and simple 1 or 2 piece press molds. During hands-on portions of the workshop, do everything from designing forms and creating paper templates to designing prototypes (and making the molds) for press-molded objects such as spouts, handles, and feet. Birdie will also present an introduction to color development in glazes.
325.00 includes personal instruction, snacks and beverages. + $25.00 material fee due on the first day of the workshop.
